The prototype demo for Bendy and the Ink Machine was the game's earliest known demo and prototype build, released on February 10, 2017, on Game Jolt once before eventually being updated to the game's first remastered edition. With Chapter 1: Moving Pictures only available, the demo itself is drastically different when compared to its later remastered updates, notably for its shorter length, simpler design, and a lack of other content that were not planned to be implemented yet. The demo was created by only two people: theMeatly and Mike D, way before hiring more developers to expand their team.
The prototype demo can be downloaded on the Internet Archive.
List of differences
Characters
- Henry Stein - All of Henry's dialogue remains the same while his voice sounds slightly higher-pitched and lacked faint echoes. There are no sound clips of Henry's footsteps and jumping. Henry would say "I'm getting the hell out of here!'" after encountering the Ink Demon; this line was removed in the Chapter 2 update.
- Wally Franks - The initial version of Wally Frank's "Offering to the Dogs" audio log sounded much cleaner in quality. His audio log does not include the transcript to along with it, as such, his name was initially unknown until it was added in the first remastered edition update.
- Dead Boris clone - The Boris clone's model has a different head model, wearing no overalls or gloves, and a giant hole from his stomach resembling a Y-shaped incision. The model is actually recycled from the Ink Demon's "Concept Bendy" design.
- Ink Demon - The Ink Demon's early "alpha" model, which was dubbed "bird poop with a smile" by the development team, originally had a human-like head, thinner misshapen horns, and a lack of both limbs. The Ink Demon also lets out a high-pitched shriek when appearing; this sound was actually reused from theMeatly's game MeatlyMakes.
- Bendy - Bendy's early cutout reveals his design to originally have his gloves each with three darts instead of two buttons, and the fact that his index finger was closer to his hand.

Items
- Inkwell, Bendy doll, gear, wrench, book, and record - All ritual items have randomized locations. They also have pick-up sound effects different from the updated versions, with the gear and wrench item used the same pick-up audio other than edited pitch tones.
- Axe - The axe was found attached to the wall instead of laying on the table. The axe, when used, has a very smooth animation, accompanied with a set of early swinging audio files.

Other features
- Main menu - The main menu screen when starting up the demo is different and simple in design. The player gets to choose to either play or exit the demo.
- Loading screen - It is entirely a black screen, saving for Bendy's early dancing animation (albeit smaller sized) used for the bottom right corner.
- Posters - From the Little Devil Darlin' and The Dancing Demon posters, Bendy's gloves have three darts instead of two buttons, with his index finger closer to his hand. The Sheep Songs! poster is the only poster that remained unchanged.
