Bendy's Inkcyclepedia, alternatively titled Bendy and the Inkcyclepedia and simply known as the Bendy Wiki, is a wiki site conceived as a source for all documented information about Bendy, a franchise media based around a series of cartoon-style horror games created by theMeatly and Mike D.
History
The Bendy Wiki was originally founded on Wiki FANDOM by Gjlewis (also known as "GJ-Lewis X" on Wiki FANDOM) on February 15, 2017, five days later after the demo release of the first Bendy and the Ink Machine chapter. The demo's vintage cartoon style and unique horror theme direction impresses Gjlewis, as a sketch artist, so much he takes an opportunity to create a wiki to archive everything about Bendy and the Ink Machine.
Around 2018, the wiki's URL was changed from bendy-and-the-ink-machine.fandom.com to bendy.fandom.com just to show that Bendy and the Ink Machine is not the only game of the franchise, after the following announcement of the Bendy in Nightmare Run mobile game. From 2019 to 2020, after the release of the first novel Bendy: Dreams Come to Life, the wiki published separated articles of known real-life subjects mentioned in the novel, including people, events, etc. After receiving complaints for having only brief amount of information with little-to-no significance to the Bendy series, the pages end up merged into listing articles as a compromise. Later on 2020, the wiki is further expanded with more articles to follow the similar formula used by the BioShock Wiki; this includes separating articles (audio log pages, etc) to make more room for information, an introduction to listing articles, etc. It was unironic, since BioShock is a huge inspiration farm for Bendy.
Over the years, however, just like most Wiki FANDOM sites, the Bendy Wiki has a history of criticisms not totally new to other wikis. It was commonly criticized for inserting misinformation with lack of citations, taking some unconfirmed information as solid facts, and leaving out unfinished and outdated content; most of the issues were left unchanged due to the result of the entire wiki admin team being almost inactive while the founder is mostly busy with his life outside of the internet. The Wiki FANDOM in general faced several controversies as well, notably the aggressive amount of ads for unregistered visitors, creative code restrictions, etc.
For both aforementioned reasons, on December 5, 2023, Gjlewis finally decided to join Wiki.gg and open up a brand-new Bendy Wiki from the ground-up as a successor to the Wiki FANDOM version, with Wiki.gg hosting it for more CSS freedom, a less disruptive anonymous reading experience, and a heavy veritable-based content, although the wiki remains private at the time. Thus, despite the new wiki's creation, the old Bendy Wiki FANDOM will still move on as a non-affiliated "zombie" wiki. Some times later before 2024, the title "Bendy's Inkcyclepedia" is adapted as the new name for the Bendy Wiki; the title is a combo pun to "encyclopedia" with "en" replaced by "ink" and "cycle" replacing "cyclo". The wiki's early name was "Bendy and the Dark Inkipedia" with "Inkipedia" as a spoof to "Wikipedia"; it was quickly changed because "Inkipedia" was found out to be already used as a name for the independent Splatoon Wiki. The wiki's theme layout used similar colors from the book cover of Joey Drew Studios Employee Handbook and novel adaptation of The Illusion of Living. When Gjlewis start modifying the codes, the first early version of the wiki's layout was based off the Bendy and the Dark Revival pause menu, then moved to more ink realm-based colors and style (yellow, brown, black, etc.) but was also scrapped early on when the test result turned out as "too ugly and eyesore" than intended.
The wiki continues to be under construction in private for the next five months, with over 100 articles made to show off some proof-of-concepts for completely new and improved page layout structures, using format inspirations from Wikipedia, as well as Wookiepedia, the Star Wars Wiki. Two character infobox templates were made to distinguish pages for the characters in real world and the ink realm. The "Behind the scenes" section is made to replace the trivia section, which was banned as a hot spot for unwanted miscellaneous information, often represented as unreliable and can easily clutter the information presented in the articles. In contrast to the trivia section, the "Behind the scenes" support reliable sources, such as development histories, portrayal information, and other significant information that does not fit with other sections.
Gjlewis is not the only one with a big dream for a new Bendy Wiki to happen. Salpho, since April 2024, makes promo posts on several social medias regarding the idea for the new Bendy Wiki, gaining a lot of attention and as well positive feedback from the Bendy fan community, but Gjlewis is unaware of the viral agreement until May 11th; Gjlewis decided to announce on X/Twitter that the new Bendy Wiki is indeed happening already and promised that the wiki will be publicly opened tomorrow. The next day, on May 12th, the new Bendy Wiki is finally live. Later on, the Italian Bendy Wiki was founded around June 2024.
