"I'm not the man. I'm just the memory." |
Joey Drew is a caricature-like ink incarnation of the memory of his real-world self of the same name who resides in the ink realm and guides Audrey Drew.
History
Origins
Joey Drew was intrigued by the idea of “cheating death”[1] during the time of Joey Drew Studios. The real-world Joey Drew died in 1971, making it likely this incarnation of Joey was a successful attempt to evade his death and live on, albeit only as a memory of who he used to be.
Guiding Audrey
As Audrey travels through the sewers, she encounters the memory of Joey Drew. He says he believes Audrey has something special in her. Even though she initially doesn’t recognize him, Audrey is surprised to find Joey alive and living. Joey then asks Audrey to take a walk, saying he wants to show her something.
Audrey questions what the ink realm’s deal is, asking if she’s dreaming considering the absurdity of the world. As they walk to his safehouse, Joey explains it is a parallel existence to the real world that is stuck in a cycle, which wears down as each new cycle is completed. Created with help from the Gent Corporation, the realm is the result of Joey choosing the wrong road, either out of revenge or regret.
He continues by explaining that Wilson Arch is altering the nature of the ink realm, adding his enforcers, the Keepers, to establish his own order against Joey’s. The Keepers are located in the Gent Workshop, and Joey informs Audrey that the answers she is seeking will be found there.
Before Audrey continues on her journey, Joey tells her one last thing: she is in the ink realm for a reason, whether she understands it or not. Audrey then questions why Joey himself can’t fix the world he made. He explains he isn’t really the physical Joey Drew, but instead just a manifestation of his memory, before dissolving into a door and revealing Joey’s tombstone behind it.
Hard truth
Just as when Audrey spots the ID card inside of the Downside Hotel, Joey appears next to her to ask her about the progression of her journey. She answers by saying that it's slow but moving forward. Joey then goes up to her and transports her into the Old Studio where he begins to show her a story of Joey Drew's life.
After the closure of his studio, Joey blamed other people, primarily Henry Stein, for his mistakes, making him bitter and reclusive. In an act of anger, Joey used the Ink Machine to create the ink realm, where he trapped an ink version of Henry in the cycle to torture him for eternity.
However, Joey later met Allison Pendle, who helped him grow as a person and see the world in a more positive light. Inspired by her, Joey created Allison Angel in the ink realm to guide and aid Henry in his journey.
Afterwards, Joey decided to make something for himself, a family. Using the Ink Machine, he created multiple attempts but eventually succeeded at creating a daughter that was very similar to a human.
After finishing the story, Joey's memory reveals to Audrey that the daughter was actually her. Audrey doesn't take the reveal lightly and denies being an ink creation, claiming she's human. Joey tries to reassure her that she's free to choose her own destiny. The origins of her creation don't define her. However, Audrey doesn't listen and demands Joey to send her back to the hotel. With nothing else to say, Joey obliges and returns her to the room where she found the ID card.
Final battle
Right after Audrey fused with the Ink Demon, Joey appears in front of the newly transformed Beast Bendy with "The End" reel on his hand, calling out to her, telling her that despite her bizarre past, he still sees her as her daughter and wants her to remember who she is as an attempt to get through to her. Angered by this, the Ink Demon goes up close to Joey and grabs him aggressively with his large right hand, cracking all of his bones. Joey, in a last effort, tells Audrey to use her heart to create her new destiny before getting crushed by the Ink Demon, resulting in his death. The Ink Demon then throws his body to the ink pit, which causes "The End" reel to fall to the ground, sealing his fate for good.
Characteristics
Physical appearance
Being created to carry on his legacy, the memory was based off of Joey's younger, optimistic days. He wears a tuxedo with a tie underneath, and a Bendy pin on the right side. His face has two scars, and his sleeves and the hem of his pants are stained with ink.
Personaility
Joey's memory is a complex, soft, and caring man, a far cry from the real Joey Drew who was a lot more bitter, angrier, prideful, and egotistical. This memory has all the guilt and regret from a past life within but without any experience to fully understand the extent of those emotions. He especially cares about Audrey, who he tries to aid in her journey but also be understanding and not push her, backing down and giving her space when needed.
Abilities
Joey's memory appears to have abilities that allow him to fade in and out of existence, demonstrated by how he appears in areas where Audrey mostly explores but with an important extent. He also has the ability to teleport as seen when he transfers Audrey to and from the Old Studio.
