"Need to get power to this gate somehow. There should be a couple switches nearby, then maybe I can open it."
Henry Stein about to find and turn on the toggle switches.[1]

Switches are electrical and mechanical operators designed for numerous use, such as activating or deactivating machines, opening or closing doors, etc.

Types

Common switches

  • Lever - Used for activating power within the studio, such as for the Ink Machine and electricity. There is an alternate version of it, only used for opening the Music Department entrance's gate.
  • Valve - Valves are located commonly around pipes, used for draining or filling ink. They are operated by turning valve wheels.
  • Handle switch - Used for certain locations such as the exit door of Buddy Boris' safehouse and for moving the shelves of the Heavenly Toys department's toy machine room.
  • Gent lock - Installed by Gent. Using the upgraded Gent pipe, the locks are used for turning off the signal powers, as well as opening metallic doors.

Unique switches

  • Toggle switch - Used for powering the lever up for opening the entrance to the Music Department.
  • Ink Machine's switch - There are two specific switches solely used for the Ink Machine. The first switch is used for turning on the Ink Machine after placing all items on the pedestals, to transfer the user into the Cycle. The second switch, the ink realm version, is found in the Ink Machine's lair, used for creating and summoning living creations, including Shipahoy Wilson.

Gameplay

Bendy and the Ink Machine

In Chapter 1: Moving Pictures':

  • Ink Machine's loading dock - One handle switch powered by two dry cells is used to raise the Ink Machine.
  • Break room - There is only one lever located at the end of the break room. Henry can only pull the lever to activate the Ink Machine's room after collecting and putting all six items on the pedestals.
  • Theater - The valve used for activating the ink pressure.
  • Basemen - There are three valves needed to drain the ink flood before going down into the next room.

In Chapter 2: The Old Song:

  • Music Department entrance - There are three toggle switches found around the areas. Find them and open the lid to activate each switch, before pulling the lever to open the entrance gate. A lever present in the stairwell is used to power the Music Department.
  • Infirmary - There is one handle switch that opens the door that takes to the boiler room. The other two handle switches are used to raise and lower the case to kill Swollen Jack.
  • Sammy Lawrence's office - After turning the two valves, Henry can access to Sammy's office and pull the pump switch to drain the ink into the stairwell.

In Chapter 3: Rise and Fall:

  • Buddy Boris' safehouse - There is an exit door that can only be opened with the handle switch, but the missing lever is only found inside the toolbox.
  • Heavenly Toys department - There is a lever to power on the toy machine from within the room. There is also a handle switch, used for moving the toy shelves. Also, behind the planks, there is a small room with three levers and a "PLEASE PULL LEVER" sign above, and pulling the levers will start the lever fight challenge.

In Chapter 4: Colossal Wonders:

  • Caverns - Into the pillar room, one lever and one valve are used to spawn a Swollen Searcher to obtain the thick ink.
  • Planning room - A lever in this room is used to open the door of Storage 9.
  • Storage 9 - Over four handle switches must be pulled to power up the Haunted House for the ride. Another two switches are present into the areas connected to Storage 9: the lever in the Research & Design area is used to open the door and the lift control into the Maintenance area.

In Chapter 5: The Last Reel:

  • Harbor deck - A lever is needed to release the barge from the barge; this lever has a longer handle than the average lever and can be used twice. There is also a handle switch inside the barge.
  • Giant Ink Machine lair - Levers are used to pass the first battle phase of Beast Bendy's fight.

Behind the scenes

The switches are one of the most common objects used for the Bendy series, and the very first switch made a first appearance in Chapter 1 of Bendy and the In Machine as a handle switch.

Development

In Bendy and the Ink Machine, from the older updates prior to the DLC release of Chapter 4: Colossal Wonders, the toggle switches in Chapter 2 are entirely different in model shape, resembling buttons and their locations are also randomly-generated. In the final version of the game, the toggle switch's early design was recycled as a button for the barge in Chapter 5: The Last Reel.
