This article refers to the enemy variant. For other uses, see Searchers (disambiguation).

"The swollen ones! They're just stuffed full of extra-thick ink. It makes me sick! And yet... it's the perfect thing for keeping myself together. If you're gonna catch them, you'll have to learn to move quietly."
Alice Angel to Henry Stein[1]

The Swollen Searchers are, as stated in their name, swollen versions of Searchers, filled with extra-thick ink.

History

Swollen Jack

Main article: Swollen Jack

One specific version of the Swollen Searchers, known as Swollen Jack, stole a valve off of a pipe. Henry needed this valve, so he goes down into the sewers to find it and ends up chasing down Swollen Jack into the boiler room. Jack will eventually go underneath a platform above him, and then Henry pulls a lever that brings both the platform and Jack down, allowing Henry to grab the valve.

Level 11

As instructed by Alice, Henry goes to the ink river station to hunt for two or three Swollen Searchers' extra-thick ink, depending on whether or not he decides to kill the Fisher seen in the area. They are seen teleporting around the station, and will disappear into the ground depending on how Henry approaches them. Henry manages to stab them with the Ink Syringe and takes their ink, and then they will never appear in the location again.

Extra-thick to thick

Entering a small room leading off from the cavern, Henry pulls a lever and turns a valve to reveal a singular Swollen Searcher, with a glob of thick ink on their back. Henry grabs it and uses it in a nearby ink maker. Henry can summon this Swollen Searcher as many times as he likes.

Characteristics

Physical appearance

The Swollen Searchers appearance looks very similar to their original counterparts, but they are slightly larger and are in a hunched position. They have a diseased-like appearance - sporting a lump on their right arm, a thumb on their left hand, the left cheek, and the left side of their back. Their stomachs also possess several large lumps and dents.

Behind the scenes

The Swollen Searchers first debut in Chapter 3: Rise and Fall, with the exception of Swollen Jack who appeared in Chapter 2: The Old Song.

Prior to Version 1.3.1, the Swollen Searchers teleported from level to level, rather than staying in Level 11. A similar behaviour went for most of the other quest items in the game, with the exception of the ink hearts.
