Sacrifice attempt for the Ink Demon

From Henry's events, Henry sees Sammy walking by in front of the end of the inky corridor, carrying a Bendy cutout while quietly speaking the sheep poetry to himself. Henry tries to get attention from Sammy, asking for help. Once approached, however, he disappears, assumed to pass through the ritual symbol.

Later on, Sammy will quietly stalk after Henry. After activating the first flow pump in his sanctuary, Sammy is seen above in the balcony, with his gaze constantly following Henry. Sammy will disappear later on when Henry leaves the studio after wiping out the second wave of Searchers. While in the flooded sewers, it is possible to see Sammy's shadow through a grating in the wall. Soon after Henry collects the second valve, however, Sammy disappears.

Later at the Music Department entrance after Henry activates the ink pump in Sammy's office, Sammy appears behind Henry and strikes him unconscious with Wally's dustpan at the Music Department entrance before the latter reaches the exit. Sammy brings Henry to his sacrifice room and makes a conversation about the Ink Demon and sacrifice plans, all while taking away the axe from Henry. When the Ink Demon is heard crawling in the pipes above, Sammy walks to his office-like room to perform the ritual.

At the beginning of the ritual, he speaks this poem-like phrase, using the microphone to speak through the sacrifice room's radios. Sammy starts summoning the Ink Demon, along with opening the gate that leads the way out. The Ink Demon was commanded by Sammy to kill Henry, so Sammy will be free from his ink form. However, as Sammy's plan turns out to backfire when the Ink Demon refuses to sacrifice Henry, Sammy begs the Ink Demon nervously to spare him as an attempt to defend himself but was seemingly killed as noticed by a large leak of ink flowing under the door.

Unexpected return

After respawning, Sammy now resides in Lost Harbor, and upon entering, the now-insane Sammy appears, busting down a boarded doorway. Completely enraged and feeling double-crossed, mistaking Henry for his savior the Ink Demon, he breaks free from this and attacks Henry with his axe, who then defends himself from Sammy.

The fight goes on until Henry knocks off Sammy's mask. Sammy cowers away from Henry and hides his own face in shame. Upon getting close to him, he grabs Henry and tosses him to the ground, preparing to finish him off. However, Tom sneaks up behind Sammy and strikes him in the back of the head with an axe, killing him and causing his body to disintegrate.

Captured by the Keepers

At one point, Sammy was captured by the Keepers and imprisoned in the Pit as Subject 418. If Audrey opens his gate cover, it reveals Sammy without his mask in which he is seen playing "The Lighter Side of Hell" with his banjo while seated around a resurrecting pentagram.

Short comeback

Sammy appears again, this time showing up on a balcony towards the climax, praising the Ink Demon and telling the Lost Ones and Searchers to surrender to the lord of the dark puddles right before he gets shot by Allison Angel with the Tommy gun. Shortly after, he falls off the balcony and perishes.

Characteristics

Physical appearance

Sammy's ink form appears as a black, muscular human-like figure wearing a smudged Bendy mask with a hole punched into the mouth. He has no visible hair, most likely due to the ink. Besides wearing no shirt, he also wears pants with suspenders that somewhat resemble the overalls Boris wears, with a patch sewn over the left knee. His shoes and lower parts of his pants are coated with ink. Under his mask, he is almost faceless, leaving only his barely-visible eye sockets.

Sammy originally had four fingers on each hand in a similar manner to cartoon characters, but changed to have a full total of five fingers.

Personality

Unlike his original human personality, Sammy has become mentally unstable, somewhat psychotic and unhinged, to the point of worshiping the Ink Demon as his "savior" and offering him sacrifices to appease him in a method similar to Satanic rituals. As a human, Sammy did not appear homicidal in his earlier recordings but appears to have become maddened by unnatural corruption prior to Henry returning to the workshop 30 years later.

Sammy seems to suffer from severe memory loss. He has been shown to suddenly forget what he was talking about mid-sentence and is so forgetful he can no longer remember his significant other or even the color of his hair.[1] The only thing he can almost remember is Henry, as he felt Henry looked familiar to him when he saw his face, although this may be a result of them being in a cycle, but ends up disregarding it and instead continues calling him a 'sheep'.

Abilities

Sammy has mastered the flow ability long before Porter and Audrey,[2] allowing him to walk through walls especially from places with seemingly dead ends.

Gameplay

Bendy and the Ink Machine

In Chapter 5: The Last Reel, Sammy is fought as a boss. Sammy's attacks can take a full total of +6 damage points to kill Henry, but his axe swinging attack will sometimes inflect a lot of damage points quicker than usual, making this boss fight slightly tougher.

Normally, it takes only +15 hits with a Gent pipe to complete Sammy's boss fight.

Weapon name Weapon damage points Total hits
Scythe* +10 damage +2 hits
Axe* +3 damage +5 hits
Pipe wrench* +2 damage +8 hits
Tommy gun* +2 damage +8 hits
Plunger* +1 damage +15 hits
Gent pipe +1 damage +15 hits
Syringe* +1 damage +15 hits
Empty Bacon Soup cans* +1 damage +15 hits

Bendy: Lone Wolf

Sammy is a playable character unlocked when Buddy Boris has collected four candles and his mask. He has the ability to walk through cracks of the walls, due to possessing the ability of Flow. He is also required in solving a music puzzle to reveal a hidden audio log.

He was introduced in the Symphony of Shadows update.

Behind the scenes

Sammy Lawrence is one of the recurring antagonists of the Bendy series. He first appear in Chapter 2: The Old Song of Bendy and the Ink Machine as a non-hostile antagonist, and later appears in Chapter 5: The Last Reel as a boss. He later appears in Boris and the Dark Survival as one of the playable characters. He also appears in Chapter 4: Factory of Horrors and Chapter 5: The Dark Revival as a minor character. It is confirmed that Sammy will return in Bendy: The Cage.

Development

Sammy was developed when the DLC version of Chapter 2 for Bendy and the Ink Machine is under production.

From the initial release of Chapter 2 and still for the Chapter 3 update in Bendy and the Ink Machine, Sammy has a slightly different model design. His body structure is slender and has a more inhuman-looking skin texture. His overalls are fairly different, looking bigger and slightly loose. His shoes and the lower parts of his overalls are melted into ink, appearing to be made out of sticky glue when he walks. His head is also different, possessing human ears and a mouth. While his mask looks almost the same, it has a duplicated texture from the back while the hole from the mask's mouth is bigger. His model was deemed not threatening enough by the development team and was redesigned to give him a better skeletal rig for more advanced animation.[3]

In Bendy and the Dark Revival, Sammy originally had an unknown larger role in the story, but it had to be cut shorter in order to fit everything else in.[2] Due to the game's troubled development, PhatMojo's merchandise for the game released from 2019 to 2020 included Sammy, presumably with the notion that he was going to have a big role.

Other information

Sammy, in his beta model from Bendy and the Ink Machine, makes a special appearance in couple of official videos promoting Hot Topic products. For this special event, Sammy is officially roleplayed by Hot Topic on Twitter to open the limited Q&A at Hot Topic's Twitter for an hour on July 26, 2017, allowing fans to ask questions. Half of the answers were trivial facts while some give out few lore pieces of his past life. Some official answers include:

  • When asked how he could see with his mask on, Sammy questioned how anyone could see without a mask.[4]
  • The banjo is Sammy's favorite instrument.[5]
  • He said that mayonnaise is an instrument if one has the proper training, which is a reference to the Nickelodeon show SpongeBob SquarePants episode, "Band Geeks" where Patrick asks Squidward if mayonnaise was an instrument, as Squidward was attempting to form a band.[6]
  • Bacon Soup was Sammy's favorite food at one time. He also appears to enjoy chocolate cake.[7]
  • When asked why he is wearing the mask, Sammy replied that he uses the mask to resemble the "most perfect form".[8]
  • Sammy's favorite song is "Willow Weep For Me", a 1932 song composed by Ann Ronell.[9]
  • Sammy started writing songs from a young age, when asked what got him into writing music.[10]
  • When theMeatly asked Sammy how he gets his overalls on, Sammy responded "with great difficulty".[11]
  • It is possible that he was infatuated with Susie Campbell prior to his transformation into an ink creature, describing her as a "charming woman".[12]
  • Likewise, he considers Alice's voice as between "heavenly" and "beautiful".[13]

In the Hello Bendy mod for Bendy and the Ink Machine, Sammy in Chapter 2 is replaced by Theodore Peterson (better known as "the Neighbor") and even reused all of his dialogue. Also, in the mod exclusively for the Hello Neighbor game, there are several Sammy masks seen scattered around the house as environmental decorations. The Neighbor even wears a mask identical to Sammy's, but its texture was horizontally flipped.

In Bendy and the Dark Revival, the subject cell number for Sammy, "418", is a reference to the release date of Chapter 2 of Bendy and the Ink Machine: April 18, 2017. Not only because April 18th is Sammy's birthday[14] but also that Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 2 was the first chapter to introduce Sammy.

Also in the finale of Bendy and the Dark Revival: Chapter 5, when Allison Angel shoots Sammy, he utters the classic Wilhelm scream stock sound.
