"Blah blah blah BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH!"
The Piper's battle quote during combat against Henry.

The Piper is one of the physical incarnations of the Butcher Gang. He is an imperfect reflection of Joey Drew Studios' cartoon character Charley.

History

Origins

Nothing much is known about Piper's origins, except for the fact that he was torn apart by Alice Angel and then beeing imprisoned with the other two Butcher Gang members Fisher and Striker into the wooden box seen in Bendy: Lone Wolf. In The Cycle are present multiple Pipers as seen in Bendy and the Ink Machine, but where these other Pipers were, when they were created and why only one of them was caged it's unknown.

Unleashed

The Piper, along with the other two Butcher Gang enemies were locked up in the wooden box until it was opened by Boris with five crate keys. Once released, Piper will be seen creeping around the levels. He would go after Boris upon being spotted, whether he had a chance to kill him.

Angel hunt

His first appearance is at the end of Level K's toy storage power hallway from Henry's left, where he suddenly arrives by breaking through a "The Butcher Gang" cartoon poster and lets out a raspy scream at Henry upon approach. Piper walks toward him, only to clumsily fall off, getting back up a few moments later to proceed to chase after Henry to attack. Henry finished Piper off with the Gent pipe before making the switch available to activate the entrance to the next location.

On Level 9, at Alice Angel's lair, multiple lifeless clones of Piper and Boris can also be seen strapped to the tables in the huge flooded area, in which multiple Fisher and Striker corpses can also be seen. Alice explains that she uses the corpses' insides to increase her beauty and shape. At the end of Level 9, Piper is next seen strapped to a table behind the window of the torture room, where he is tortured by Alice with heating sparks. She contemplates the possibility of killing Henry or tear him apart for the heart, using Piper as an example. Behind Piper's torture for punishment, Alice claims that he stormed into her chamber while trying to kill her, and if he succeeded he would have sent her back to the Dark Puddles. After demanding Henry to do her bidding, Twisted Alice blocks the entire window with the gate and resumes torturing Piper.

The Piper spawns in the areas on Level K when Henry starts the special gear task for Alice, roaming around the indoor balcony, the toy storage along with its power hallway where he was first encountered. In this fetch quest, Piper will be seen holding the special gear in his right hand, and will drop it after he is killed. Piper will later respawn during Henry's other tasks.

When coming back after destroying the Bendy cutouts, Henry's next task is to defend Alice's entrance of the inner sanctum on Level 9 from Piper, and the other Butcher Gang enemies.[1]

Finding Henry

At Storage 9, Piper is encountered in the Research & Design department, where he, Fisher, and Striker gather around a fire in a barrel. Having no weapons to equip, Henry's one other way of passing the Butcher Gang is to use empty Bacon Soup cans to create a distraction, drawing them away from the entrance to nearby rooms, otherwise, they will go after Henry to attack if he did not make it safely to other rooms in time, or if he didn't distract him. Hitting him with an empty can of Bacon Soup makes him, and the others catch Henry and chase him.[2]

Later on, at the Administration, Piper is seen wandering around the location's maze to be on duty to guard the place, along with Striker and Fisher to prevent Henry from getting the thick ink needed to create the pipes to drain the ink in the film vault. When he spots him a startling sound will begin and he will chase him, Henry can still hide in the Little Miracle Stations to make him lose sight out of him.[3]

Lurking around the ink world

He first appears as a seemingly dead corpse that emerges from a vent in the ceiling. He later reappeared in the Heavenly Toys department area; when Audrey was climbing a brick wall, the Piper takes her by surprise and uses his pipe wrench to knock her to the ground before performing a jump attack, forcing Audrey to flee. When she hides in a Miracle Station, he tries to attack her through the peeping hole, to no avail. Piper then hears humming that sounds eerily similar to that of the ink version of Alice. Realizing that the evil angel might be nearby, he decides to stop attacking Audrey and walks away.[4]

Later on, he can be found anywhere, hiding in a linker pipe or normal pipe puddle. He would sometimes pop up from there and will attempt to take down Audrey but will run back to the puddle if taken enough damage or out of range.

Piper is last seen when Audrey, as Beast Bendy, arrives to restart the Cycle during the climax. He is seen trying to free himself from the weight of the Lurker's foot.[5]

Characteristics

Physical appearance

Like his original form Charley, he is a cartoon humanoid character, with large ears, a black nose, a black beard and sideburns, a nearly bald head, and wearing a black tailcoat with a tan vest and a black tie. His stature is slightly taller than the two other Butcher Gang enemies. In his physical form however, has a much more twisted and disfigured appearance. Unlike the Butcher Gang enemies, Piper looks much more recognizable comparing to his original counterpart. Piper wields the pipe wrench as his weapon, hence his name.

In context to Charley, both of his eyes are mutilated in a different manner; his right eye being gouged out and filled with some kind of ink, while sporting a stitched X-shape for the left eye. Instead of originally circular, the shape of his ears strangely resembles those of a human. His mouth is always wide open as if screaming, with human-like teeth instead of usual triangular ones. He wears a single black shoe on his left leg and has a peg-leg for his right leg, which gives him a limp when walking or running. His arms are long and skinny, and he wears a white glove on his right hand. His left arm looks stiff in position, and he is also missing his entire left hand. His tailcoat is slightly worn out with the right sleeve shorter than the left, and a hole is located from the bottom left of his stomach to reveal his innards.

In Bendy and the Ink Machine, Piper's X-shaped left eye has small stitches, a plunger for his right leg, and an animalistic nose similar to his original counterpart.

In Bendy and the Dark Revival, Piper has gone through a much more realistic appearance. He has a more human-looking face, more exposed rotten teeth gums from the upper jaw, a leathery X-shaped stitch over a permanently closed eye, a less animalistic nose that still slightly resembles his original, and his plunger peg-leg is instead a pipe peg-leg. The hole located from the bottom left of his stomach now appears to have his innards spilling out, as it shows a bit of his intestines now hanging out just above his left leg. His right sleeve is no longer rolled up, and he has some cloth wrapped around his remaining ankle.

Behavior

Piper moves very quickly towards the protagonist, and when near them he will slow down. When close enough, Piper deals damage by hitting with his pipe wrench. Piper has a very low range vertical strike and a high range horizontal strike.

Gameplay

Strategy

Bendy and the Ink Machine

The Piper is the first Butcher Gang enemy Henry would encounter. In Chapter 3 during his first encounter, he deals a total of +6 damage points to kill Henry. However, in his later encounters in Chapter 3, his damage points reduce to +2, while he takes +3 damage points in Chapter 4 and 5.

A good strategy to kill him is to wait for him to attack, back away, and come back while the animation is still playing. That way, Henry will be able to hit him at least twice before he can attack again. If faced with multiple Butcher Gang enemies it's best to kill him after Striker, as he is not very strong but not as slow as Fisher, which allows Henry to lure him away from Fisher and kill him easily. If he gets too close to the ink trails of the Ink Demon, he will die instantly. If Henry has no weapons, hiding inside the Little Miracle Station will make Piper stop attacking.

Behind the scenes

The Piper is an enemy who first appeared in Bendy and the Ink Machine, from the third to fifth chapter. He returned in Bendy and the Dark Revival and rarely spawned throughout the chapters. He also appeared in Bendy: Lone Wolf as one of the unlockable enemies, first introduced in The Unleashed update when the game was known as Boris and the Dark Survival.

Development

The Piper was created while the initial DLC version of the third Bendy and the Ink Machine chapter is under development. In his original concept art by theMeatly, Piper's clothes are more worn, and his chin seems to melt with few wax-like drips.

Prior to the release of Bendy and the Dark Revival, the Piper was shown off in the game's 2019 "gameplay" trailer, where he wanders in the hall for a bit and ends up getting vanquished by Audrey's banish power. There is no possible way to use the banishing power on the Piper in the final game, however.

Portrayal

The Piper's gibberish voice was done by theMeatly in Bendy and the Ink Machine,[6] and voiced by John Meissner in Bendy and the Dark Revival.
