"Once, there was a wolf. Living in a very dangerous world. Surviving on anything he could find. And fearing the Ink Demon that stalked his every move."
Bendy: Lone Wolf's intro.

Boris is a Boris clone based on Joey Drew Studios' cartoon character of the same name and a reincarnation of Buddy.

History

Origins

Though unclear how, somewhere along the line, Buddy ended up in the ink realm and was reincarnated as a clone of Boris the Wolf.[2]

Exploring the ink realm

During his time in the ink realm, Boris scavenges the realm for food, tools and other items he can use to survive or discover more about the studio. He tries to survive in the ink realm, where he’s stalked by the Ink Demon among other aggressors.

Friends until the end

After escaping from Sammy Lawrence and the Ink Demon, Henry enters the S3 vault and notices a can of Bacon Soup roll in his direction. As Henry demands the person around the corner show themselves, he is shocked to discover a living Boris walk around the corner to meet him.

Boris takes Henry to his safehouse where they're safe from any danger. After waking up, Henry prepares a bowl of bacon soup for Boris in exchange for the door lever to open the main door, and the pair venture out into the studio.

Henry picks up a flashlight, and they navigate their way through a Dark Hallway, Henry having to keep close to Boris, who will tremble and cower if too far apart, likely afraid of the darkness. As they navigate the hallway, Boris seems puzzled after both himself and Henry hear what seems to be someone sprinting above. After reaching the end of the dark hallway, Boris crawls to the air vent to open the gate to the Heavenly Toys Department after borrowing the flashlight from Henry. Because of this, they’re briefly separated until Henry reaches the small area where the door leading to the toy storage is found after Angel & Demon paths.

After reuniting, Boris gives Henry a Gent pipe to use as a weapon.

Both enter the toy storage, and Henry tells Boris to pull the lever from one hall next to the Bendy statue while Henry himself goes to attempt activating the other lever in order to open a door to Level K, only to be interrupted by the disfigured Butcher Gang enemy known as the Piper. After Henry kills Piper, he pulls his lever at the same time as Boris, opening the door to the next location.

Both enter the elevator as Boris accompanies Henry to Alice Angel's lair on Level 9.

On Level 9, when the pair enters the flooded morgue-like area, Boris discovers a nearly identical copy of himself near the entrance, strapped down to a table and cut open, just like the one Henry found in the main studio. The area has many of the deceased Boris clones, along with dead members of the Butcher Gang. As Boris stares at "himself," Alice Angel reveals that she used the clones of Boris to make herself "beautiful," using their insides to try and repair her broken state. The corpses left behind were simply the remains of anything she did not need. The nature of the death of all these clones with their insides torn out also hint at the one responsible for the death of the Boris clone on the upper floors.

Throughout the quests, Boris will wait inside of the elevator as Henry travels to the various floors to do tasks for Alice Angel. Whenever the Ink Demon or any other aggravated enemies appear within a certain radius, Boris cowers in fear until they are defeated or disappear, or moving to a different floor with the elevator to flee from the enemies.

At the end, with all of Alice Angel's quests accomplished, she double-crosses Henry after promising to let him escape, causing the elevator to plummet downwards. She screams that she wants Boris' insides to make herself beautiful, claiming that he is "the most perfect" one she's come across. The elevator crashes on Level S with Henry knocked out but Boris did not. As he comes to, Boris tries desperately to wake him up as Alice Angel approaches from behind. Boris is then dragged into the darkness by Alice Angel.

Boris was captured by Alice Angel and it was up to Henry to make his way and save him. Henry makes his away from the accountant and financing all the way to Bendy Land's Haunted House, where Henry would find Boris in time. Unfortunately, towards the end within the ballroom, Henry's mission of saving Boris' life was ultimately in vain, as Boris, now appearing as a massively monstrous version of himself named "Brute Boris", comes out of the darkness and throws the roller cart Henry was using away from him. Henry is forced to confront the monstrous Boris in a battle and kills him off at the end ending the suffering for being used by the angel.

Journey out of sight

Audrey, after opening the shutter door, can see Boris walking away in a hallway. If continuing down the hallway, then a vent will shut, implying he crawled into it. Boris can also later be seen crawling through one of the vents in search for something within the Gent Workshop.

A Lone Wolf

In the interrupted version of the ink realm, Boris never really meets Henry, and as such he continues his supply hunt through the studio's halls. He journeyed deeper into the studio, collecting supplies to live by, among other things. Each level type he explores has things to offer.

Boris collects scraps from lockers within the Studio and uses them to create a picture in his safehouse, as an attempt to depict his own original human self, "Buddy."

Boris finds fuses from machine boxes within the Artist's Rest and uses them to fix the fuseball game present at the safehouse, getting the score higher then 10 unlocks an audio log from Joey Drew.

Boris locates ink hearts throughout the Abyss and causes the Projectionist to begin hunting him. Boris looks for hearts around the abyss, and eventually the Keepers attack and behead the Projectionist, taking him to the Pit.

Boris acquires tapes through the open ribcage of dead Boris clones within the Lower Levels to hear the story of a sad person named Milla Legna. Milla says to find the key to her door in the last tape, so Boris does exactly that and discovers Milla, hooded in the darkness. But as she removes the hood, it's revealed that Milla was lying, and that she was Alice Angel, luring the wolf to his doom. Boris is hunted down as he searches for supplies throughout the Lower Levels. After collecting all of them, the Keepers take Alice to the Pit, while Boris remains out of her clutches.

Boris goes out to collect five padlock keys to unlock a mysterious crate that has been set up in a room in his safehouse with the message written on the wall saying "LET US OUT". He opens the crate to see whats inside, this decision however lead to disastrous results as inside the crate was The Butcher Gang. Boris has unleashed them to the studio.

Boris collects four candles and Sammy's mask from the coffins throughout the Music Department level and brings them back at the pedestal that was set up at the guys bathroom within the safehouse. This causes the Wolf to get a vision of the past from the perspective of the Mad Composer and Fallen Prophet of the studio, Sammy Lawrence. From Sammy's perspective, he starts lurking around the Music Department, hiding away from his once so called "saviour", the Ink Demon. He heads on over to his office to play his sets of instruments to open up his sanctuary to hide from the demon. The sanctuary kept sammy hidden from the demon and the world outside, but it didn't kept him hidden from anything else as eventually, he too was captured by the Keepers and was taken to the Pit. After this, an audio log from Wilson is revealed.

Boris finds Lost Papers throughout the Tunnels and uses them to hear a story about two Lost Ones playing a game of hide and seek. Porter was the seeker, and Heidi was the hider. The Ink Demon is present with them as they play the game, but Porter avoids him with his flow ability. After Heidi is found 3 times, the Keepers enter the scene. Porter escapes, but Heidi is taken to the Pit.

Once all of the objectives are completed, He discovers a door with a gent sign next to it, opening the door showcases the Gent laboratory room with a mysterious machine in the middle. An audio log next to it reveals to be from Thomas Connor where he explains that the machine is actually a Prototype Ink Machine. He explains that one time during testing of the machine, it opened a portal to the ink realm. Concerned about this discovery, He deemed the prototype a failure, tore down the machine and hid five schematics inside of the Gent Security Turrets believing that anyone would have to be mad if they get to close to them. Boris then goes out to the one place he hasn't yet explored, the Gent Workshop level. After exploring the place and destroying some turrets, Boris managed to collect the five schematics needed for the machine and headed back to the safehouse. Once he went back to the room, he discovers that to build the prototype, he needs seven prototype parts to fully complete the machine, those seven parts are then revealed to be inside of the mystery boxes that are set up around his safehouse in areas where he completed the objectives. After collecting the seven parts, he fully completes the machine and activates it but not until the cycle unleashed the final test for boris by fighting off a horde of Searchers, Lost Ones and Mechanical mascots. Once he prevailed, he looked over at the machine beginning to charge up, moments later, it created a portal to the realm of the real world. Boris then looks at the portal to see the real world in front of him before he stepped through, escaping the cycle for good.

Characteristics

Physical appearance

A tall, dog-like being with pie-cut eyes, Boris appears almost perfectly identical to the original cartoon character, other than having a taller and almost human-like appearance. Unlike Tom and most cartoon characters, the opening of Boris' pie eyes are always facing right, like Boris' eyes in the "Sheep Songs!" poster.

In Bendy and the Ink Machine, his texture looks cleaner while in Boris and the Dark Survival they feature more shading with sketchier and detailed lines. In Bendy and the Dark Revival and Bendy: Lone Wolf, while his head looks pretty much the same, his build is different with it looking less "cartoony" and more reminiscing of human anatomy. He also maintains the sketchier look to him but now with better ink textures.

Personality

Boris is completely mute, since he never spoke or made any kind of noise. As he and Henry explore the studio together, he is shown to be timid in nature whenever an enemy lurks nearby, most often seen when the Ink Demon prowls the halls. He is also shown to have a fear of darkness (likewise known as "nyctophobia"), which is seen if Henry walks too far away from him in the dark hallways. However, Buddy Boris is far from mean-spirited, giving Henry a safe place to recover in his safehouse and helping him navigate the lower floors.

Behind the scenes

Boris is one of the major characters who appeared in Bendy and the Ink Machine from the second to fourth chapter as the deuteragonist. He also briefly appeared in Bendy and the Dark Revival and as a main playable character in Boris and the Dark Survival and Bendy: Lone Wolf.

Development

Boris was created for the second chapter's DLC release for Bendy and the Ink Machine.

From the initial release of Chapter 2: The Old Song, the walking animation for Boris when he reveals himself was initially very basic in the earlier versions of Chapter 2. With the release of the Chapter 3 update, the animation was changed to be more detailed and to match the new animations used throughout Chapter 3. In addition to the pre-updated Chapter 2, Boris' eyes were originally facing in opposite directions as if cross-eyed.

Boris' AI in the game's third chapter was considered to be the most difficult part for the Joey Drew Studios Inc team to work on.[4]

Other information

From the first Q&A video, theMeatly had a final question which asked if Boris is a good guy before Chapter 3's release. theMeatly began to answer the question before getting interrupted with the ending titles.[5] On Twitter, theMeatly attempted to finish explaining the answer to the question, but couldn't because of the Twitter character limit.[6]

Matt Goles, the game programmer of Bendy and the Ink Machine, tweeted his joke claim that he wanted to add a new character to Chapter 3's update for Chapter 4's DLC release but theMeatly decline this idea because he thought it was too "radical". Furthermore, he introduces "Borkis" who turns out to be exactly Boris with his head rotated upside down, described as the "chillest dude and was afraid of nothing".[7] The name Borkis would later be used as the enemy for Boris and the Dark Survival and Bendy: Lone Wolf.
