"Audrey, meet Tom. He's my protector. My friend." |
Tom is a prosthetic-armed Boris clone somewhat based on the cartoon counterpart. He dislikes strangers and is often accompanied by his partner, Allison Angel.
History
Early life
Tom's origins are mostly unknown, but it's likely he was created along with the other Boris clones.
At one point, he discovers Allison messing with the ink, and he presumably stopped her before anything bad happened. They would then become partners, and Allison would dub this Boris clone she met as Tom, as he seems to respond to it.[2]
While it's unknown how, Tom lost his left arm at one point. It's likely that either Allison (who seems to know how to repair it) or Tom attached the Bendy animatronic's left arm onto his.
Imprisoning and saving Henry
Tom and Allison shows up to Henry after the death of Brute Boris and Alice. They take him to their safehouse to, reluctantly, imprison him.[2]
Tom is asked by Allison Angel to keep an eye on Henry as she leaves. Thinking that Henry is dangerous, Tom silently threatens him, as he beats his prosthetic hand with an axe while watching Henry, and later on swiping Henry's soup bowl on the floor. At one point Tom has a risky encounter with the Ink Demon, though he escaped and made it back to the safehouse, leaving his mechanical arm broken. Allison scolds him for that while repairing his prosthetic arm. After that, when the Ink Demon is approaching outside their base, Allison tells that they cannot just leave Henry behind and she tried to break the wooden planks from Henry's prison, though Tom, due to still lacking his trust for Henry, is less than convinced, as he places his hand on Allison's shoulder to imply to her that Henry's life was less important than theirs and they were unable to free him in time. They both depart the base.
After their escape, Tom and Allison arrive in the Lost Harbor shortly after Henry (who managed to escape the prison on his own) arrived to save him from the now-insane Sammy Lawrence.
Saving and helping Audrey
Tom is first mentioned by Allison when Audrey asks if she can come with her,[3] and later on after Allison fatally stabbed Alice, Tom walks up and is introduced to Audrey. After Allison and Audrey chat, Tom can be petted until Audrey leaves and the two of them vanish.[1]
Tom later shows up with the others to help out Audrey (who's in the form of Beast Bendy), riding on top of the Lurker to battle against the Lost Ones and Searchers.[1]
Characteristics
Physical appearance
Tom's appearance is based on Boris, one of Joey Drew Studios' cartoon characters. While closely resembling Boris from the ink world, his slanted eyes, battle scars, and a Bendy animatronic arm as his left prosthetic arm are the only differences in contrast to the other Boris clones.
In Bendy and the Ink Machine, Tom is basically identical to Boris, only with angry eyes and a robotic left arm. In Bendy and the Dark Revival, Tom is given with more unique traits, such as battle scars on his muzzle, a tip of his left ear is torn off, and his left overall strap is missing.
Personality
Tom is a mute yet tough and cautious cartoon wolf character. He is first rude, distrusting, and uncaring to strangers, even if they are not oppressive threats, but seems to get along with them quickly as time goes on, as this was the case for both Audrey and Henry.
Behind the scenes
Tom is the deurtagonist who debuts in Bendy and the Ink Machine at the end of Chapter 4: Colossal Wonders and has a larger role in Chapter 5: The Last Reel. In Bendy and the Dark Revival, he's first mentioned in Chapter 1: Drawn to Darkness, but makes a larger appearance in Chapter 5: The Dark Revival.
Development
Tom was conceptualized during development for the fourth Bendy and the Ink Machine chapter's DLC release. From Gavin McCarthy's concept art, Tom was originally depicted to look basically calm like Boris with no slanted eyes, while his prosthetic arm looks bigger and his forehead appears to be drenched with ink. Tom in his model showcase images by Pascal Cleroux was shown to be reusing the same eye textures as Boris'.
Other information
Tom is Mike D's favorite character of the mainline Bendy series.[4]
In Bendy and the Ink Machine, if Henry puts a bone in Boris' mouth during Chapter 3: Rise and Fall, a bone will appear in Tom's mouth when using the Seeing Tool.
