"He's too powerful to destroy. So we sealed him away, trapped him in a different form. One that was smaller, harmless."
Wilson referring to the Ink Demon's cartoon form.

Bendy is a physical manifestation of the character of the same name. He follows Audrey throughout her journey through the Cycle, and accompanies her as a companion. Despite seeming innocent on the surface Bendy is, in reality, a form of the Ink Demon, created by the Keepers in an effort to bring order to the Cycle.

History

Early life

One of the most important aspects of Wilson's plan to take over the Cycle was figuring out a way to eliminate the threat of the Ink Demon once and for all, in order to replace him with a more controllable god. To that end, Wilson ordered The Keepers to assist in the goal of capturing and executing the Ink Demon. The Keepers succeeded in their goals and captured the Ink Demon but found him unable to be killed no matter what they did. As an alternative solution to the lingering problem, The Keepers pressed the Demon's ink into a new form - Bendy. In this new form, Bendy was noted as being able to show visible emotion as well as cries of pain, something The Keepers considered a mark of success. With the Ink Demon now considered to be entirely harmless, Bendy was set free to roam the Cycle alone, with the Ink Demon trapped inside of its body.

Releasing the beast

211 days later, Bendy was playing with his toy train near the entrance to Animation Alley, when suddenly Audrey found him for the first time. Bendy was scared at first, but Audrey was able to coax him into being her friend. However, out of nowhere, Audrey's Banish ability went off without warning, giving Bendy a painful shock and scaring him away. However, this did more than just hurt Bendy - it was the very thing that released the Ink Demon from his prison. Wherever the Ink Demon went, Bendy would follow, with the Ink Demon sometimes transforming back into Bendy thanks to the signal towers.

Friendship and betrayal

Eventually, Bendy and Audrey would once again cross paths properly in the Lost City's subway station. After assuring Bendy that she didn't mean to hurt him last time and that they'll be safe with her, Bendy agrees to help Audrey get into the old Gent building at the edge of town. By searching through the various bins and dumpsters around the streets, Bendy is able to help Audrey find a clue that leads them to an abandoned motel on the other side of town in order to find an ID card. However, once Audrey obtains the ID card, Bendy is nowhere to be found - it turns out that Bendy has transformed back into the Ink Demon, who reveals himself at the entrance to the Gent building. However, right before he's able to consume Audrey, the signal towers activate and transform the Ink Demon back into Bendy, who gives Audrey one last solemn look before disappearing.

Freedom

After resetting the Cycle and gaining control over the realm, Audrey is able to use the Ink Machine to bring Bendy into the real world, supposedly now completely separate from the influence of the Ink Demon.

Spying the explorer

While the explorer of the Drawing Board looks around the place uncovering mysteries, Bendy spies on them throgh cracks in the walls, retreating back into the darkness upon being spotted by the explorer.

Characteristics

Physical appearance

Like other cartoon representations of Joey Drew Studios characters, Bendy appears as a three-dimensional living version of his cartoon design. Unlike the original design, he wears a proper outfit, with a brown waistcoat and striped pants while retaining his signature bowtie and gloves. Despite his overall intact appearance in contrast to the other monsters of the studio, Bendy still has some imperfections. The ink on his head is uneven and dripping over his face. He also has numerous ink stains on his clothing.

When he is out of the Cycle, his face and gloves are now white while the tie is shaded red and the rest of his clothes are a dark blue.

Personality

Though assumed to be as mischievous as his cartoon persona,[1] Bendy is actually rather timid and has a childlike demeanor. He is able to display a range of emotions despite being mute, crying when Audrey accidentally hurts him and fleeing when he sees her later on, as well as being visibly afraid when Audrey mentions the Gent workshop due to the Keepers' torture and experimentation.

However, in stark contrast to his original incarnation, Bendy does not wish to hurt others, as he is similar to that of a child and like being around people. He is willing to help those he befriends, seemingly rather cheerful around them.

Behind the scenes

Bendy is the deuteragonist who appeared in Bendy and the Dark Revival. He also makes a couple of hidden cameos in Bendy: Secrets of the Machine.

Development

Bendy was created during production of Bendy and the Dark Revival, and his PhatMojo merchandise (such as hanger clips and action figures) were leaked around November 2019 prior to the game's release.

Originally, Bendy was planned to talk via squeaks, but this was believed to be too distracting and the suggestion was scrapped soon after to make him entirely mute instead.[2]

Miscellaneous

In Bendy and the Dark Revival, when Bendy is accompanying Audrey during Chapter 4, attacking him with the Gent Pipe causes his head to spin around like a globe accompanied with a cartoon sound effect.
